Terms of Service

The rules for using Stepler: what you can expect from us, what we expect from you, and where the limits sit.

This agreement

These terms are the agreement between you and [Legal entity name] (“Stepler”, “we”) covering the Stepler Chrome extension, the website at stepler.dev, and anything else we offer through them. Creating an account or using the extension means you accept them.

They sit alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains what we do with your data. If you do not agree with either, please do not use Stepler.

Who can use Stepler

  • You must be at least 13 years old.
  • If you are under 18, you need a parent, guardian, or school to agree to these terms on your behalf.
  • If you are using Stepler through a school or tutoring provider, that organisation is responsible for its own students’ use.

We may ask you to confirm your age or your guardian’s consent, and we can close accounts that do not meet these requirements.

Your account

You need an account to use Stepler. Give us an email address you actually control, keep your password to yourself, and tell us through the report a problem form if you think someone else has got into your account.

An account is for one person. Sharing logins so several students can use one plan is not allowed, and it is the most common reason we suspend accounts.

What Stepler is, and what it is not

Stepler is a study aid. It produces step-by-step working for STEM questions using AI, aligned as closely as we can manage to IGCSE and A-Level mark-scheme phrasing.

It is not a tutor, an examiner, or an official source. Explanations can be wrong, incomplete, or out of step with your specific exam board and specification. Always check the working against your own mark scheme, textbook, or teacher before you rely on it.

In plain terms. Treat every answer as a worked example to check, not a fact to copy. Marks are awarded by your examiner, not by us, and we cannot promise a grade.

Academic honesty

Stepler is built for revision and practice. Your school, college, or exam board sets the rules about what help is allowed in coursework, controlled assessments, and non-exam assessment, and those rules override anything convenient about this tool.

Do not submit Stepler’s output as your own work where that is prohibited. Breaking your institution’s rules is your responsibility, and the consequences sit with you and your school, not with us.

Acceptable use

While using Stepler, do not:

  • Resell, sublicense, or repackage Stepler or its output as your own service.
  • Scrape, crawl, or automate the extension or our APIs, or use them outside the official extension and website.
  • Get around question limits, rate limits, or paywalls, including by making extra accounts.
  • Reverse-engineer, decompile, or interfere with how Stepler works, or probe it for vulnerabilities without our written permission.
  • Upload content you have no right to share, or material that is unlawful, abusive, or has nothing to do with studying.
  • Use Stepler in a live exam or assessment where outside help is not permitted.

Found a security issue? Report it through the report a problem form rather than testing how far it goes. We will work with you on it.

The content you send us

The screenshots and questions you upload stay yours. By sending them, you give us the licence we need to run the service: to store them, process them with OCR, pass them to the AI providers that generate your explanation, and show them back to you in your question history.

You confirm you have the right to upload what you send. Past papers and textbooks are usually protected by copyright; uploading a page for your own private study is normally fine, but redistributing it is not, and that part is on you.

Explanations Stepler generates for you are yours to use for your own study, subject to the academic honesty section above.

Plans, billing and cancellation

Free plan

The free plan gives you a set number of questions per day. We can change that allowance as costs and capacity change, and we will say so on the pricing page when we do.

Paid plans

Paid plans renew automatically each billing period at the price shown when you subscribed, until you cancel. Payments are handled by our payment processor; we never see your full card details.

Cancelling and refunds

Cancel any time from your account. Access continues to the end of the period you have already paid for, and we do not pro-rate part-used periods. If something is genuinely broken and we cannot fix it, use the report a problem form and we will sort out a refund. Statutory refund rights in your country still apply.

Price changes

We will give you at least 30 days’ notice by email before a price change affects your renewal, so you can cancel first if you would rather not continue.

Fair use and limits

Every question costs us compute, so all plans, including unlimited ones, are subject to fair use. If usage looks automated, shared between people, or far outside normal revision patterns, we may slow down, temporarily limit, or suspend the account. We will contact you before doing anything permanent unless the activity is clearly abusive.

What belongs to us

Stepler’s software, interface, prompts, branding, and content are ours or our licensors’. Using the service gives you a personal, non-transferable, revocable licence to use it as intended, and nothing more. The Stepler name and logo stay ours.

Services we rely on

Stepler is built on services run by other companies, including the Chrome Web Store, our authentication and database provider, AI model providers, and our payment processor. Their outages, changes, and terms affect what we can deliver.

We choose these providers carefully, but we are not responsible for how they run their own services.

Suspension and closing accounts

You can delete your account at any time by asking through the report a problem form.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, puts other users or the service at risk, or is being used fraudulently. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will warn you first and give you a chance to put it right. If we close a paid account without cause, we will refund the unused part of the period.

Disclaimers and liability

Stepler is provided “as is”. We do not guarantee that it will always be available, that explanations will be accurate, or that it will fit any particular syllabus or purpose.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, including lost marks, missed grades, or missed deadlines. Where we are liable, our total liability is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or £50.

Nothing here excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded, including for death, personal injury, or fraud, and it does not affect your consumer rights.

Changes to Stepler and to these terms

We add, change, and occasionally remove features. We may also update these terms. When a change materially affects you, we will move the last-updated date and give notice through the website, the extension, or email before it takes effect. Carrying on using Stepler afterwards means you accept the updated terms; if you do not, close your account.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of [Jurisdiction], and the courts of [Jurisdiction] have non-exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country you live in. Before starting any formal dispute, please tell us through the report a problem form. Most things are quicker to fix that way.
